Fleece, as shown on an alpaca.

Alpacas produce one of the world’s finest and most luxurious natural fibers, and is the second most expensive fiber in the world. It is extremely desirable among natural fibers because of its unique qualities of luster, soft, silky handle, and a range of 16 recognized natural colors.  The fiber is shorn yearly, usually in the spring, without causing injury to the animal.  It is warmer, lighter, and stronger than wool.  Ancient Incan civilizations treasured the alpaca for this fine cashmere-like fleece, which was reserved for Incan Royalty, hence it is known as "the fiber of the gods".

Today, alpaca fiber is highly desirable and is enjoyed by spinners, weavers, and designers around the world.  Alpaca fiber can be turned into popular woolen products such as scarves, hats, gloves, blankets, socks,  sweaters, capes, and shawls. Designers including Liz Claiborne, Dolce & Gabbana, Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, and Giuliana Teso, have finished worsted products (coats, suits, capes, pants, suits, sweaters) made from alpaca. These items can be found in some of the most recognized department stores around the world including Neiman Marcus, Saks 5th Avenue, Macy’s and Nordstrom’s.
